San Juan Island:
the most diverse of the three main islands, combining rocky shores and sandy beaches, prairie and pastureland, lakes and forest. A spectacular destination surrounded by the pristine waters of the Puget Sound. San Juan Island features two main port locations; Friday Harbor, the County Seat is located on the southern part of the island and Roche Harbor is located on the north side. Friday Harbor is filled with art galleries, boutiques and water-view restaurants. It`s also home to The Whale Museum, which educates visitors about the Islands` famous residents - more than 80 Orca whales. The Orcas make their home in the San Juans typically from late April through the end of September - sometimes longer. The `San Juan Island Orca Fest: A Celebration of Water and Wildlife` takes place each May. Wildlife action is not limited to the seas. Bald eagles, osprey, hawks, and wild turkeys perch in trees. Migratory birds -- trumpeter swans, oystercatchers, cormorant, great blue heron, harlequin ducks, Canada geese and many others -- often make extended stays on island lakes and saltwater shores.Visitors will want to get out and explore the rest of San Juan Island, stopping at San Juan Vineyards, historic Roche Harbor -- once the largest lime and Cement Company west of the Mississippi -- or Westcott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park, a 19-acre, outdoor museum with over 100 sculptures in stone, wood and metal. Other attractions include Pelindaba Lavender Farm, Westcott Bay Sea Farms` famous oysters, Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm & Country Store, and San Juan Golf and Country Club. View history at the San Juan Historical Museum or the two national parks. San Juan Community Theatre presents year-round performances featuring island talents and world-class touring performers. Hiking, biking, sea kayaking, boating, fishing, birding, beachcombing and scuba diving are also very popular activities on San Juan Island. Special events and festivals are plentiful. During the quiet season, visitors can enjoy art, nature and writing workshops. The Island also boasts two National Historic Parks, British Camp and American Camp. British Camp is northwest of Friday Harbor and has an English Garden and an old block house, located right on the water it is a great spot for clam digging, picnics or weddings. On the south side of the Island is American Camp which has incredible sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, wonderful beaches and miles of hiking trails. There are several state and county parks as well as many private resorts which offer accommodations, dining and activities. San Juan Island residents take pride in their agricultural and nautical heritage. Conservation easements preserving open vistas across pastoral lands and museums filled with yesteryears` treasures attest to this. The islands, emerald gems on sparkling seas, have hosted visitors for hundreds of years. Today, islanders welcome visitors to experience an inspiring lifestyle.
